An ageless vagabond, with an infallible knowledge of all times, the Doctor has been exiled from his own race, the Time Lords, for crimes he cannot remember. He is assisted by his two lovely companions, whose task is to keep the Doctor out of trouble - an impossible assignment if ever there was one! The trio travel through time and space in Tardis, a strangely-shaped contraption that looks as big inside as out. Its occupants can visit any period or planet, meet any person and take part in any adventure.
The Good Doctor (William Hartnell) uses his TARDIS spaceship to travel through time and space. He picks up some hangers-on - school teachers Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), his granddaughter Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford), as well as a pet cat - as he travels from the age of the Aztecs to 16th-century Italy, encountering Daleks along the way.

The first season of Doctor Who was the first to be produced, following the pilot episode being transmitted and well-received in 1963. The series started on 23 November 1963 and saw the introduction of William Hartnell as the First Doctor, Carole Ann Ford as his granddaughter Susan Foreman, Jacqueline Hill as history teacher Barbara Wright and William Russell as science teacher Ian Chesterton. The initial 13 stories form one complete season. Although the serial format continued after this point, it did not constitute a further season as such until The Power of the Daleks in 1966
